Churches of Jamaica

Church
So many people are trying to figure out what makes Jamaica and Jamaicans so REVERED. Could it be because we have a long history of being a church-loving people? Jamaican has a zillion churches, or pretty close to a zillion. We are a God-fearing country and for the most post we are very religious-tolerant. The only religions that have no place in Jamaica are those that have to do with the praising and worshiping of Satan, aka the devil. If you were to set up a tent or a tarpaulin, on any day of the week, and start saying something about 'loving God' you are guaranteed a Jamaican audience. Absolutely amazing.

Most Christian denominations are represented in Jamaica. From the world's first churches (Catholic and Anglican) to the world's most recent (Church of God of this and Church of Christ of that). The buildings range from very elaborate to very simple. One thing for sure, every Jamaican knows a church when we see one, in Jamaica.

Cliff Jumping - Negril, Jamaica

Cliff Jumper
In Negril, Jamaica, you can literally go jump off a cliff (for the fun of it). Yup, in the very western section of Negril, called West End, there are cliffs and caves galore. People go there to watch the perfect sunset, and also to get a super cool adrenaline rush by jumping off the cliffs into the beautiful Caribbean Sea. Rick's Cafe is the most popular spot for Cliff Jumping, but there are also several other great jumping spots.

Of course, you don't need us to tell you that jumping off cliffs is a very dangerous life-threatening thing. So if ever you jump, you do so at your own risk. Bim!

Congratulations Jamaica

Flag
Now that the Olympics have come to an end, we here at Bonita Jamaica will return to what we do best; positively represent and promote Jamaica in the global arena. Our athletes all did a great job in giving the world a taste of how great Jamaica is. Not all our athletes performed well enough to win a medal, but for us you are all winners. By simply stepping out in your Jamaican colors to perform was enough. Out of 204 countries that participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics, Jamaica came in 20th, with 11 medals. Stellar!

Olympics
Days leading up to the opening of the games, the Wall Street Journal ran a story that pointed out that all our sprinters were being trained in Jamaica, and not in any foreign country. That story also pointed out that some of the sprinters who trained at the University of Technology (UTECH), Kingston, Jamaica, did so in a gym that had a broken air condition unit, and that they also trained on a dirt track. The point was well made that we are not a financially resource rich country. Still, we entered Beijing and walked away as the star country of the games, which makes the point that money does not make people and countries great. And because jealousy is a disease with no cure, don't expect everyone in the world to be happy for us. Haters and naysayers are already upon us, talking all sort of bs.

And as for that television network in the US called NBC (NBC Universal). We would just like to remind you that nothing and no one can stop greatness. You did a very poor job in showing the Jamaican events and in bringing your viewers our medal and award ceremonies. Still, the entire world knows that Jamaica ruled the Olympics.

So many firsts in this Olympics. It's the first time any one man broke three world records in his three events. It's the first time one country got all the medals in the women's 100M race. And the list goes on.

Congratulations once again to Jamaica's entire Olympic Team, including all the staff and behind-the-scenes personnel. Big up all Jamaicans and all friends of Jamaica worldwide. Now we celebrate. Bim!

It's beautiful to be revered.

Jamaica Expects More Gold

Winners

Despite a few setbacks at the Beijing Olympics, Jamaica is still poised to grab a record medal haul. So far, the world has not seen the best of the Jamaicans who will certainly dominate the men and women 4x100m relays with the likes of Usian Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser, the 100m champions.

Former world record holder Asafa Powell was expected to earn a medal in the 100m sprint. But that did not happen; he choked again! Neither did 100m hurdles medal favorite, Delloreen Ennis-London who ran a good race, kept close to the leaders, but was unable to surge among the top three at the end of the race.

Who would have imagined that the three Jamaican girls who qualified for the 100m at the Jamaica trials, would have all medaled in the 100m.

And who would have thought that Shericka Williams, the third place finisher at the Jamaica trials, would have=2 0cleverly saved her speed for the last 100m in the 400m finals to earned a silver. Shericka could have caught Christine Uhurougu of Britain, the eventual winner, if the race had been longer. Nonetheless, her silver makes up for Ennis-London's failure to medal.

Jamaica's medal tall now stands at five with 2 golds and 3 silver.

So what’s next for Jamaica in the medal count

Today Bolt goes for gold and Michael Johnson’s record in the 200m. Johnson’s world and Olympic record of 19.32 set in Atlanta in 1996 is certainly within Bolt’s potential, but as we are learning from this Olympics, Bolt won’t run to his full potential unless he has serious and gold medal-threatening competition. He will need to go at full speed, without slowing down, to break the record.

His main challenger is defending Olympic champion, American Shawn Crawford. Crawford has not run close to Bolt’s season's best of 19.67. If their semifinal heat was any indication, then Bolt will have to run, instead of jog, to become the first man since Carl Lewis to win the Olympic sprint double.

Veronica Campbell-Brown is also poised to run for gold20in the 200m. When she did not qualify for the 100m at the Jamaica trials, she came back in the 200m with a scorching personal best of 21.94, which is the fastest time this year.

Seeing the impressive sweep by her compatriots in the 100m is enough motivation for Campbell who was a double gold medalist at the previous Olympics in Athens. She should hold off her countrywoman Kerron Stewart and American Allyson Felix to defend her 200m Olympic title giving Jamaica another gold.

It would be somewhat surprising if Felix does not medal and there is a Jamaican sweep. But as the Jamaican women showed us the 100m, anything is possible. Stewart has the second best time of the year, 21.99, and teammate Sherone Simpson ran the fastest quarter-final time going into tomorrow's semi-final.

Jamaica is also banking on 400m hurdler Melaine Walker who has the season's best time of 53.48 entering tomorrow's final to secure another gold medal.

But nothing in the Olympics is guaranteed. Hard work can lead to success, and God helps those who help themselves.

Bolt broke the 100m record wi th one of shoelaces untied; Shelly-Ann got a good start, never looked back and the rest is history; Shericka saved her energy for the end and came from nowhere to earn a silver medal.

With two golds and three silver medals, who would have thought that Jamaica might leave this Olympics with more golds than silver and bronze combined.

It just shows that we, as Jamaicans, are more than talented; we are blessed.

Every Jamaican is potentially a great Jamaican.

Shelly-Ann Stuns the World in Jamaican 100m Trifecta

Beijing Olympics Athletics Womens 100M
Gold winner Shelly-Ann Fraser, left, and silver medalists Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson pose with Jamaican flags after their sprint sweep (the first ever sprint sweep in the history of the olympics) , Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno)

by Teswayne Harris

The world is shocked! A virtually unknown Jamaican woman has joined another Jamaican Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man, as the world’s fastest woman. Her name is Shelly-Ann Fraser, but you can call her Olympic Champion after she won the women’s 100m Finals at Birds Nest stadium in Beijing.

The world is even more shocked that none of the three competing American earned a medal after Fraser’s compatriots Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart both earned a silver with a equal second place finish, completing a rare trifecta for the Jamaicans. It was the first time that a nation has swept the women’s 100m, Olympics or world championship.

It was also the first time since 1976 Olympics that an American woman did not finish in the top three spots.

But history did not come with a little bit of controversy as American officials protested the Jamaicans’ victory claiming that American Torri Edwards had false-started the race. Edwards finished dead last and the American’s appeal was procedurally denied.

No Jamaican woman has ever won an Olympic gold in the 100m and if a Jamaican was supposed to win it, no one would have bet on Fraser, who hails from the Waterhouse area of Kingston.

“I can’t believe I actually won. Nobody expected me to win, so there was no pressure,” Fraser told international reporters.

Stewart was the pre-race favorite, having run consistently since posting a personal best of 10.80 in winning the Jamaica trials. It was obvious that, unlike Fraser, Stewart had a bad start, but managed to close in on teammate Simpson to finish with an equal timing of 10.98 seconds.

But it does not matter how they finished as Jamaica made history earning three medals in one race to bring its Beijing Olympics tally to four, following Bolt’s recording-breaking run in the 100m.

“It’s about time the Jamaicans went 1-2-3. We‘ve been waiting on this. So many athletes have come so close” to winning a gold medal in the 100m, Stewart said after the race.

Jamaica’s most decorated Olympian Merlene Ottey competed in the 100m and the 200m at the Olympics for Jamaica from 1980 - 2000, but never won a gold medal in either race. She earned 4 bronze medals, 2 silver, and the name Bronze Queen.

At the previous Olympics in Athens, Veronica Campbell won Jamaica’s first female sprint gold medal, but that was in the 200m, leaving the tiny nation of 2.8 million people with a tradition of sprinters bereft of a 100m gold.

Campbell won the 100m at last year’s world championship, but failed to qualify for the Olympics at the Jamaica trials. She came fourth and 0.01 seconds short of one of the three spots.

After the trials, controversy had swirled in the air as to whether Campbell was going to be one of the three Jamaicans to compete the 100m in Beijing. JAAA rule states that the first two automatically qualifies, but the third place selection is at its discretion.

Campbell was disappointed that she failed to qualify and graciously admitted that “it’s just a part of life.” But proper judgment prevailed. Campbell did not run and all three Jamaicans earned a medal.

But none is as happy as first time Olympian Shelly-Ann who said in her post-race interview, “I am so excited, I really am, I can’t wait to go home.”

But Shelly Ann, yuh haffi guh wait, caah yuh have anodda gold medal fi collec’ inna di 4x100m weh start Thursday.

You’ve shocked the world, even your fellow Jamaicans, but that won’t happen again, because today you told everyone who you are: Jamaica’s first female 100m Olympic champion.

Usain Bolts Jamaica to Victory

Bolt

by Teswayne Harris

It was as if he knew he would win the race. It was as if he knew he would break the world record, one more time. It was as if he was running all by himself, in a lane and in a race all by himself.

But he was not. He was chased by 7 others, including his compatriot and former world record holder Asafa Powell. None of them could have caught him and by the time that was a thought, the race was over and a new world and Olympic record set: 9.69.

Running out of lane three, the man known as “lightning” was almost the last one to react to the start gun, but after the first 50 meters of the race, it was clear that Bolt had separated not only from Trinidad’s Richard Thompson, the 2nd place finisher, but also from the rest of the field.

Participating in his first Olympics, the 6 feet 5 inches Jamaican Usain Bolt reaffirmed what everyone already knew: he is the world’s fastest man. But Bolt did not need 100 meters to claim the title as the race was won from about 70 meters.

Within 70 meters of the race Bolt started to celebrate, extending his arms outward and then beating his chest as he crossed the finish line. On this night, he did not care about a world record; an Olympic victory in the 100m for him, his family and his cou ntry was more important.

No Jamaican male or female has ever won a 100m gold medal at the Olympics. Bolt did it, bringing home glory to Jamaica and to every Jamaican national at home and abroad.

Bolt ran a very fast race and it took numerous replays to see actually how he did it. But one still has to wonder how fast can he run.

At 21, the Puma-endorsed athlete is still young and his ascendancy to the top of the world’s purest sport comes at a time when he has no real challenger or competition, either in the 100m or the 200m.

His main rival American Tyson Gay is coming off an injury and is on the decline. Countryman Asafa Powell is not a competitor and does not compete well in races when he has a challenger who can beat him. Powell runs better when there is no competition.

Bolt is incomparable. He thrives for the big events and the competition that it brings. Earlier this year at the Reebok Grand Prix, he destroyed Gay in his first big test in the 100m, setting a new world record 9.72.

Now he sets sights on the 200m world and Olympic record, 19.32, held by his idol, American Michael Johnson. Gay was supposed to be his main rival in this event, but an injury at the U.S. trials prevented him from qualifying. It was Gay who beat Bolt at last year’s world championship and revenge would have been sweete r for Bolt with the sprint double.

This week, Bolt will school the field in the 200m and gain his second Olympic gold. He will also ask his teammates Michael Frater, Nesta Carter and Powell, all of whom have sub 10.0 secs personal bests, to assist him in earning his third gold medal in the 4x100m relays.

It would not be surprising if Bolt earns three gold medals. In fact, Jamaica expects him to earn three gold medals.
But before the moment passes and our memory fades, let’s all savour the moment when Bolt crossed the finish line, beating his chest and running around the track, putting Jamaica in the world’s spotlight.

We have witnessed a Jamaican named Bolt as the fastest man on the planet. It was as if we, Jamaicans, knew that this moment would arrive.

If so many people came out and behaved so excited about our 46th birthday party, what is going to happen when we become 50? Oh Lord help us!

Got to love this little girl's energy (National Stadium, Kingston)

Happy 46th Birthday, Jamaica.

The Jamaican Flag
Flag
Jamaica celebrates Independence Day on August 6th each year. Jamaica became an independent nation on August 6, 1962; never to be ruled again by the British or by anyone. We love it that we are now our own boss and run our own show. This calls for a grand celebration. So today eat, drink and be merry. Happy 46th Jamaica. Bim!

The Jamaican National Flag was first raised on Independence Day, August 6, 1962. It signifies the birth of our nation.

The Flag brings to mind memories of past achievements and gives inspiration towards further success. It is flown on many triumphant occasions, showing the pride that Jamaicans have in their country and in the flag itself.
