Beware of Fake Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee lovers worldwide, beware of fake/counterfeit Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee brands. The Jamaica Observer is reporting that counterfeit Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee brands are very popular in the global market. So please beware and get the facts from Jamaica's Coffee Industry Board CIB.

From the Jamaica Observer:

RACKETEERS worldwide marketing fake Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee are now closer to being exposed as the Coffee Industry Board (CIB) Wednesday launched its new website to provide a direct link for international buyers and display counterfeit brands.

"This is the first phase of the site, the second phase will allow buyers abroad to track the status of their shipment," CIB chairman Howard Mitchell said at the launch held at the Board's downtown Kingston office.

Jamaican Newton Marshall Finishes 13th in Dogsled Race

Congratulations to Newton Marshall and the entire Jamaica Dogsled Team. Keep up the great work.

In what is being described as a major coup in extreme sports, a former horseback-riding guide has become the first Jamaican and the first black man to take part in the gruelling Yukon Quest dog race in Alaska.

Just like the 1990s blockbuster bobsleigh film Cool Runnings, Newton Marshall has crossed all boundaries in the freezing Alaskan outback, finishing 13th in the toughest dogsled race in the world.

"It felt like climbing Mount Everest because the race spanned four different mountain ranges and along with that type of terrain, came the wind that cuts like a knife," said the 25-year-old St Ann-born man who first saw snow two years ago.

The conditions were so brutal, he felt like quitting several times but, like a rawboned, courageous Jamaican, kept on.

Sandals Negril Wins Platinum Award

Congratulations Sandals. Keep up the great work.

Negril, Westmoreland - Sandals Negril resort has become the first hotel in the world to receive Green Globe's inaugural Platinum Award for consistently meeting and exceeding the organisation's standards for environmental preservation and community involvement.

Adam Stewart, chief executive officer of Sandals Resorts International (SRI), the Caribbean's leading resort chain, after accepting the award last week, used the occasion to announce two groundbreaking environmental projects launched in St Lucia and The Bahamas which, if successful, will be replicated in Jamaica.

"We are changing the way we run our hotels, to serve Mother Nature," Stewart said. "If Sandals can do this in the other islands, then we can carry these programmes to Jamaica and other hotels will eventually catch on."

Introducing La Pluma Negra

La Pluma Negra
La Pluma Negra is a clothing brand that started around November of 2003, in Kingston, Jamaica, out of the need to have a Jamaican brand that offers quality clothing and exhibits cultural awareness and national pride. The designs are avant-garde, sexy, 'tough', classy, and capture the great sense of humor of the Caribbean by using well-known phrases. The line initially started with t-shirts, but today their collection has capris, sweatshirts, jackets, sweat suits, hats, underwear, and much more.

The name 'La Pluma Negra' is Spanish for 'the Black pen or feather'. Their goal is to use this 'pen' to document cultural nuances. La Pluma Negra caters to men, women, and children. Their children line, called 'Tickles', is designed to teach children all over the world about the history and culture of Jamaica and the Caribbean, and to help children develop a sense of culture and pride.

The brand can be purchased online at www.plumanegra.com or www.laplumanegra.com. Their store is located at:

96 Hope Road
Kingston 6, Jamaica

There are many retail stores throughout Jamaica that carry La Pluma Negra. This awesome brand is also available in retail stores in the USA, Canada, Trinidad, and other Caribbean islands.

The black feather (pen) writes about Jamaican and Caribbean culture, history, and life.

Please support La Pluma Negra. Retailers from all over the world who would like to carry the La Pluma Negra brand are invited to contact La Pluma Negra through their website.

Bonita Jamaica loves and supports La Pluma Negra.

JamPact 's Interactive Forum with Senator Warren Newby

Senator Newby
On Friday January 16, 2009, Jamaica Impact, Inc. (JamPact) hosted an interactive forum with Senator Warren Newby, Jamaica’s Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth, & Sports, at the Consulate General in New York City. It was a very interesting exchange that saw Senator Newby outline his, and the current government’s, plan to make life better for Jamaica's youths. There were many interesting questions from the audience and many interesting responses, both from Senator Newby and the audience, as Jamaicans search for solutions to the many problems facing Jamaican youths.

Brenda LaGrange Johnson Loves Jamaica

The Jamaica Gleaner's Lifestyle Editor Barbara Ellington recently interviewed Brenda LaGrange Johnson, outgoing US Ambassador to Jamaica. It is a very interesting interview, especially her answer to the ‘best memory of Jamaica’ question.

Check this out:

Question
What's the best memory that you will take with you from your tour of duty and any advice for your successor?

Answer
The great people I have met and great friends I have made. In spite of the fact that there is a wonderful diplomatic corps and an amazing staff to work with, you have to branch out and meet Jamaicans. They are what make this country great. I have found everyone from the lowliest worker to the prime minister to be hard-working, loves their family and is very patriotic. I admire so much the fact that almost everywhere I go, the national anthem is played, even at the movie theatre. We sing ours at the Super Bowl and big events but not as often as it is done here. Patriotism is very much a part of the Jamaican psyche.

Question
You honeymooned here and you have seen a lot of the country; do you have a favourite spot in Jamaica?

Answer
I am a diplomat so I can't pick one, but my children love Kool Runnings, Jakes in St Elizabeth, to jump off the cliff, the Black River Safari, Dunn's River Falls and all the other places that offer adventure. I like the resorts like the Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall, Jamaica Inn where Britain's John Major goes all the time; Round Hill with Josef Forstmayr (if I were going to be in the hotel business, it would only be if he could manage my property). We constantly go to Tryall because our family is huge and the villas are large and it offers everything. They have a fabulous tennis programme. Sandals
Montego Bay has made me a convert to all-inclusives too. I was there recently with a large group and I was stunned by the quality of everything and my friends were amazed. They know how to service the customer. Those are among the places I love.

Question
Do you have a love for any particular Jamaican food or dish?

Answer
I love chicken and I do think I have had more here than anywhere else. My children love Scotchies Restaurant in Montego Bay. It's their favourite place here. They feel they are 'Jamerican' and are often upset if when they leave they don't have a set return date. They have been here 16 times in three years. My other favourites are jerk chicken, callaloo and yams (though I'll never be Usain Bolt).
