Charity: Canned Food and Toy Drive, NYC

On November 18, 2008, Uplift Jamaica and Rhona Fox, Inc. hosted a holiday canned food and toy drive, at Rehab (nightclub), New York City, for needy children in Jamaica. People from New York City and surrounding areas were asked beforehand to pass through Rehab and drop off canned foods and toys to support this worthy cause.

There were special performances from up-and-coming Brooklyn-based reggae artiste Khalilah, and by reggae artiste Etana, The Strong One. Actor and singer Leon (from the movie Cool Runnings) presided over the event, along with DJ Baby Face, from King Addies Sound System. Many special guests passed through, including Jamaican top-ranking male model Oraine Barrett. It was a beautiful and intimate event for a great cause.

Gyptian's Album Launch Party

Gyptian has a new album entitled I Can Feel Your Pain. On Tuesday October 21, 2008, we attended Gyptian’s album launch party, at Element (nightclub), New York City. This event was brought to the world by Rhona Fox, Inc. and VP Records.

There was non-stop excitement leading up to Gyptian’s arrival. Promotional models, celebrities, media people, and guests all mixed and mingled to the sounds of sikkK dancehall reggae beats. Gyptian entered Element in his element and received a hero’s welcome. He met and greeted fans and gave interviews to the media then made preparations to perform.

Showtime started with a belly dancer, who wiggled her waistline Egyptian-style. Ms. Belly Dancer was hot. The audience loved it (we loved it too). Then Gyptian took to the stage and delivered an ace performance that made everyone who purchased the album feel happy and proud they did. It was an awesome album launch party.

I Can Feel Your Pain has 13 tracks. Our favorites are track no. 3 – I Can Feel Your Pain, and track no. 12 – More Love. But the entire album is great. You should purchase three copies: One for your home, one for your car, and one for your safety deposit box. Bonita Jamaica loves Gyptian. Please support him.

Charitable Works Jamaica

A friend of ours in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, recently told us that one of his colleagues seriously threatened to quit his job if his boss did not approve his vacation time to go on a charity mission to a developing country. Our friend could not understand why this trip meant so much to his colleague. We told him why.

The truth be told, each year thousands of foreigners visit our great and beautiful country to give their time and service to help better the lives of our poor and marginalized and our country. Even though they do so with humility, their charity should not be taken for granted and should not go unnoticed.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the great folks from across the world who have visited Jamaica in the past, and will visit Jamaica in the future, to help make a difference. We know that there are many other things that you could do with your time and we truly appreciate it. God bless you all.

Note to Jamaicans in Jamaica: When you see these great folks doing good in our great country, please remember to tell them thank you and please continue to treat them like royalty. And please do not stand idly by and let anyone mistreat them. Make a citizens arrest if you must. Bim!

Jamaica National Building Society’s Wealth Creation Roundtable, New York City

On October 24, 2008, Jamaica National Building Society in collaboration with the Association of Jamaican Potters held a wealth creation roundtable, entitled ‘Save & Invest For A Better Jamaica’, at The Hilton, New York, in New York City.

According to Earl Jarrett, General Manager, Jamaica National Building Society is committed and dedicated to its customers and has been doing all it can to help and support small businesses in their quest for capital to attain success. To help make this point, Jamaica National Building Society collaborated with the Jamaican Association of Potters, who they have been working with to achieve success. Two members from the Association of Jamaica Potters were in attendance, Vilya Thomas and Margaret McGhie. They showcased very beautiful and impressive pottery pieces from members of the Association of Jamaican Potters, including pieces that they created.

Jamaica National Building Society is Jamaica’s third largest financial institution and is one of Jamaica’s oldest and finest. We here at Bonita Jamaica do not give financial and/or investment advice, but according to Earl Jarrett, Jamaica National Building Society is a solid financial institution and is great to do business with. So Mr. Barrett is asking Jamaica and non-Jamaicans all over the world to keep Jamaica National Building Society in mind for future financial services.

The event was intimate and rich in good financial information about current developments in Jamaica and in the global arena. Guests also got a chance to meet Vilya Thomas and Margaret McGhie, two of Jamaica’s most talented potters. Before the evening was over, we learned that pottery is a highly sophisticated art form that requires insurmountable skill, patience, discipline, and dedication. We also learned that pieces from Cecil Baugh, Jamaica’s ‘master potter’, are owned by the Queen of England (on display in Buckingham Palace) and by Nelson Mandela.

Dignitaries in attendance included Geneive Brown, Jamaica’s Consul General to New York City, and Una Clarke, former Brooklyn Councilwoman.

NY Times looks back on the life of Ian Flemming, who created James Bond (007) in Jamaica. Flemming who died in 1964 would have been 100 years old this year. The NY Times story takes readers and viewers back to Jamaica. Ian Flemming was a wise man, he knew just how great Jamaica is. If it wasn't for Jamaica there would be no James Bond. Yup, had Flemming written the stories from another location James Bond probably would have been named Richard Kond (008), which is not as ingenious as James Bond (007).

Irie Jamboree 2008, Queens, NY, USA

Irie Jamboree is an annual dancehall reggae concert that is held in Roy Wilkins Park, Queens, New York, USA. It is an Irie Jam Media event. We passed through Irie Jamboree 2008 (held on August 30) and we must tell you that it was an awesome event. It was the first major Caribbean event in New York, following Jamaica’s great performance at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. So it really was a mixture of the Olympics celebration and a dancehall reggae concert in one. It was a perfect summer day and thousands came out to party and celebrate.

The artiste line-up included Beenie Man, Coco Tea, Sizzla, Mavado, Elephant Man, Assassin, Demarco, Admiral Bailey, Empress Isis, and Ras David. Sight and Sound sound system played an impressive set. Two of Jamaica’s female star athletes (Aleen Bailey and Chelsea Hammond) from the Olympics passed through and were well received by the crowd. The two athletes accepted honors on behalf of Jamaica’s Olympic Team. Dignitaries passing through included Yvette Clarke, NY Congresswoman, and her mother, Una Clarke, former Brooklyn counsel woman. Celebrities and special guests were around galore.

All the artistes delivered great performances. It was a beautiful event that drew the curtains down on summer in New York City in fine style. Bim!

The Badass Dinner Toga Party

The thing about Hedonism II, Negril, Jamaica, is that they really know how to throw parties and show their guests a really good time. Of course, the same holds true for Hedonism III, Runaway Bay, Jamaica. And so you know, there is no Hedonism I. So no more emails about where you can find Hedo I.

We passed through this badass dinner toga party in late June this year at Hedonism II. And believe it or not, this was really the pre-party. The real party would start later in the nightclub that's on the property and would get even wickeder and wilder. But starting the night off right is important. So you serve yourself a fine meal. Then you get as many drinks as you need to get the right mood for the night. Then you watch the on-stage entertainment. Then you join in and and party like there's no tomorrow. Well, there is tomorrow, so in the morning when you wake, ask someone in watersports to take you for a water ski lesson. Yup, learn something new! All for one cool price.

Congratulations Judge Patrick Robinson

On November 4, 2008, Judge Patrick Lipton Robinson, Jamaican, was elected President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). The appointment will be effective on November 17, 2008. This is a great achievement by a top-ranking Jamaican. Congratulations Judge Robinson. This is what we are talking about when we talk about the great achievements of Jamaicans globally. We wish Judge Robinson well and we hope he will see to it that the good people of Yugoslavia get the justice that they seek. God speed and keep making Jamaica proud.

The ICTY is a United Nations body that was formed to prosecute serious crimes and atrocities that were committed during the wars in the former Yugoslavia (since 1991), and to try their alleged perpetrators. The tribunal is an ad-hoc court and is located in The Hague in the Netherlands.

Byron Lee was a great Jamaica icon in life and will continue to be a great Jamaican icon in death. RIP Byron Lee. Because we love to have fun and party, we will especially remember you for bringing carnival to Jamaica, from Sunday night at Chukka Cove to Sunday all day at the road parade. But your achievements went way beyond Jamaica Carnival. You did your part for Jamaica and you did it very well. You are a model for our citizenry and a true patriot. God be with you.

Ian Forrest, a Jamaican from the Parish of St. Mary, has an awesome radio show on WBAI 99.5 FM, Your Peace and Justice Community Radio, based in New York City, USA. The show is called Connections and is aired 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on alternate Monday mornings. The last show was on October 13, 2008, so please do the math for future shows.

The October 13, 2008 show starts with a musical journey called "The Musical Connection" (3:00 a.m. – 4:00 a.m.), with sounds of the Caribbean street, featuring the late, great, Alton Ellis (reggae artiste who died recently). The 9th Annual Epicurean Escape

The Epicurean Escape is a very special food (yum yum) festival that is hosted annually by Grand Lido Negril, the perfect resort. This year saw the festival celebrating its ninth year. And what a celebration it was. Five days (June 25 – 29, 2008) of food festivities being presided over by some of the world’s finest chefs.

Many celebrities, dignitaries, students, guests, media houses, and food fans converged upon Grand Lido Negril, the perfect resort, to eat, party, relax, and then eat again. Our favorite events were the cooking classes, the beach party, the grand gala banquet, and the cook-off (cooking competition). So many treats, so little time.

Special thanks to the management and staff of Grand Lido Negril, the perfect resort, for hosting such an awesome world-class food festival. You did Jamaica proud, yet again.
