RIP Alton Ellis (Dead at 70)

Alton Ellis, the smooth Jamaican singer and songwriter known as the Godfather of Rock Steady, died early Saturday morning (local time) in London. He was 70 and had lived in Middlesex, England, for nearly two decades.

The cause was multiple myeloma, a form of bone cancer, said his business manager, Trish De Rosa.

Starting in the 1950s, Mr. Ellis helped lay the foundations of the Jamaican recording industry, singing songs that would profoundly influence global pop music.

Sandals Resorts Honeymoon Test Drive

Sandals
For many engaged couples, the happiest time of their life can also be the most stressful. From cakes and canapes to dresses and deejays, couples exhaustively taste, test and sample it all, with the exception of one of the most important elements of getting married -- their highly anticipated honeymoon. With the notion that one's honeymoon should be just as perfect as the wedding itself, Sandals Resorts, the Caribbean's most romantic vacation experience, is offering a stress-free approach to honeymoon planning through its annual Test Drive Your Honeymoon event. Available on January 14, 2009 and January 28, 2009 for only $149 per person, including airfare, this exclusive event allows couples to take an unprecedented peek at their honeymoon long before they say 'I do' during a one-day jaunt to Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort & Private Island in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

"When its comes to honeymoons, it is stunning how many couples rarely try before they buy -- especially for what is considered one of the most anticipated of all wedding festivities," Joann Delgin, Chief Romance Officer of Sandals Resorts, said. "What we have created here is an amazing opportunity for couples to feel confident, excited and stress-free about their choice in honeymoon destination. From gourmet dining and luxurious accommodations to entertainment and the exclusive Red Lane Spa, 'test drive' couples experience it all and, as an added bonus, break free from winter's icy grip for the day!"

The National Library of Jamaica

The one question that so many people in the global community keep asking (us) is: 'How did Jamaica, a little country of approximately 2.8 million people, got to be so great in a world of 6.5 billion people?' Of course, we tell them that when you go you will know. And yet, so many people visit Jamaica each year and leave without getting the answer. Of course, they all leave more empowered and feeling refreshed and revitalized. But the mystery remains unsolved.

A gentleman from Boston, Massachusetts, USA, told us that when he was in college he witnessed the Jamaican movie 'The Harder They Come' (starring Jimmy Cliff, et al) playing in a cinema in Boston for four years, which is the record for the longest running movie in a country that is all about movies. USA. Dude said he took many dates to that movie and was amazed at how long the movie ran and the strong support and following it had over the four years. So the mystery of the revered little country, Jamaica, continues.

Perhaps we can solve this mystery together. Let's go back to the archives. The National Library of Jamaica is the perfect place to start. We love history, especially Jamaican history. From the days of the Arawak Indians all the way to the present, one thing has remained constant, that there's something about the place (Jamaica) that makes it so great. Journey back in time with the National Library of Jamaica and see if you can get a little closer to solving the mystery of the great little revered country, rightfully named, Jamaica.
