RIP Albert Huie

Albert Huie, brilliant and masterful Jamaican Painter, passed on Sunday January 31, 2010, at 89 years old. He passed in Baltimore, Maryland, where he resided. Huie is considered to be the father of Jamaican painting and in 2001 a book on his life and work was published. The title of the book is Albert Huie: Father of Jamaican Painting. It was written by Edward Lucie-Smith. Huie had the distinct pleasure of exhibiting his magical works of art in Jamaica, Canada, and the United States of America. He won many awards and was the recipient of two of Jamaica’s prestigious honors, Order of Distinction (OD) in 1983, and Commander of the Order of Distinction (COD) in 1992.

Another brilliant son of Jamaica has gone to the other side. RIP Albert Huie.

RIP Professor Rex Nettleford

Professor Honourable Ralston ‘Rex’ Nettleford, OM (Order of Merit, Jamaica’s third highest award), passed yesterday, at the George Washington Hospital, in Washington, DC, USA. Professor Nettleford was in Washington, DC, to attend a fundraiser for the University of the West Indies when he collapsed at his hotel. It was reported that he suffered a cardiac arrest which resulted in brain injury. He was taken to the hospital in an unconscious state and never regained consciousness. Professor Nettleford was one of Jamaica’s finest sons. He was an intellectual, a stalwart, and a regional and global icon. He was an author, academic, orator, choreographer, dancer, and cultural advocate. He passed hours before his 77 birthday, which would have been today.

Jamaica and the Caribbean will miss Professor Nettleford. Protecting and preserving our culture as a country and a region was very important to him. We found this video of Judith Laird interviewing Professor Nettleford on Youtube. This is one of his last interviews, if not his last. This interview occurred late November 2009, while Professor Nettleford attended and participated in The Commonwealth People’s Forum, which was held at the Cascadia Hotel, Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago.

Final Update on American Airlines Crash in Kingston

Investigations so far into the crash of American Airlines Flight 331, in Kingston, Jamaica, have ruled out mechanical failure and runway inadequacy. Which leaves us with pilot error and/or recklessness. But so far, investigators are not 'pointing any fingers.' Case closed.

WSJ: Officials Probe Pilot History, Airport Safety

Congrats to the WSJ and to Andy Pasztor, for being the first in what is going to be an attempt to divert global attention from what really happened with the AA CRASH in Kingston, Jamaica. The facts stand tall here and NO attempt to mislead the world on what really happened will succeed.

Reports out of Jamaica from Jamaicans who were on the plane point to the plane landing in the middle, or near to the middle, of the runway. All the passengers clapped, as Jamaicans always do when a plane lands. Then all hell broke loose. The pilot is very experienced. But just maybe he was not on point on Tuesday night. All indicators in this CRASH point to pilot error and/or mechanical error. Nothing is wrong with the runway. In fact, the runways at Jamaica's two international airports are even better than many runways in many so-called first-world countries.

Several years ago when the runway at Norman Manley International Airport, in Kingston, where the accident occurred, was due an upgrade, the Jamaican government contracted with a first-world firm to do the upgrade. This firm recommended that Jamaica sourced the granite for the job from Canada. The great people of Jamaica were against sourcing granite from Canada, since we have granite in Jamaica. The Jamaican government went ahead and got the granite from Canada, to ensure that the runway meet global standards.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic 747 jumbo jets land on that runway all the time in good and bad weather. Also, the Concorde, when it was around, used to land on that runway. And if that is not enough, the BIG US Military cargo plane, can't remember the name of it, that transports trucks, cranes, tractors, etc in times of disasters have landed on that runway to help with recovery efforts in Jamaica after hurricanes. One last thing, an AIR Jamaica plane landed at approximately 9:30 pm under the same conditions that same night. The AA crash occurred at approximately 10:20 pm.

Again, nothing is wrong with our runways in Jamaica. They are world class and better than many runways in many first-world countries. Poor visibility, pilot error, and or mechanical error caused this CRASH.

American Airlines Flight No. 331 Overshoots Runway in Kingston, Jamaica

On Tuesday December 22, 2009 at about 10:20 p.m., American Airlines Flight No. 331 (Boeing 737-800) overshot the runway while attempting landing at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica. The landing attempt was made during a rainstorm. The plane broke through the barrier fence, went across the road that leads to Port Royal, then came to a stop on the beach (several feet from the sea). Approximately 154 passengers were on board. Several passengers, some news reports are saying 40 and some are saying 90, were injured and were taken to Kingston Public Hospital. We are happy to report that none of the passengers died. Thank God.

Norman Manley International Airport is a world class international airport. Several years ago when the runway was being upgraded the Jamaican government purchased the granite from Canada. This was very upsetting to the Jamaican people since we have granite in Jamaica. However, the Jamaican government went ahead and got the material from Canada to ensure that the airport runway complies with international standards.

This accident appears to be pilot or mechanical error. Large 747 planes from British Airways and Virgin Atlantic land on that runway in good and bad weather all the time. Also, Air Jamaica had two or more A340 air buses that would land on that runway all the time. Jamaica’s two international airports, Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay are both world class.

Please also note that the Concorde used to land on that runway.

Usain Bolt - Almost Time Magazine's Person of the Year

Time Magazine has announced their person of the year award for 2009. It goes to Ben Bernake, Chief of the US Federal Reserve. The runners up are Stanley McChrystal, The Chinese Worker, Nancy Polosi, and Usain Bolt. So Usain Bolt is not quite Time Magazine's person of the year but he was a formidable contender. Congrats to Usain Bolt, the fastest human being in the history of the world.

Kudos to the Jamaica Gleaner for making a number of significant historical stories in Jamaica available online for the citizens of the world to see. The Jamaica Gleaner calls it Pieces of the Past. Here are ten stories from the collection:

Port Royal Earthquake of 1692
On June 7, 1692, after winding up his morning prayer service, Dr. Emmanuel Heath, the Anglican rector in Port Royal, left St. Paul's Church and walked to a nearby tavern. There he met his friend John White, who was president of the island's Council, and the two men got to chatting. Soon goblets of wormwood wine were brought out and White lit his customary pipe of tobacco. Before it was outed and the wine drunk, the floor suddenly began to rumble and shake. "Lord, Sir," the Rev. Heath asked his friend, "what's this?" (Gragg, 2000). Full story…

The Great Exhibition of 1891
The Exhibition itself was the dream of native Jamaican A. C. Sinclair. One of the compilers of the annual Handbooks of Jamaica, Sinclair was inspired by the 1851 Great Exhibition at London's Crystal Palace. He tried in vain for many years to drum up support for his ambitious project. When Sir Henry Blake arrived as Jamaica's new Governor in March 1889 Sinclair managed to persuade William Fawcett, director of gardens and plantations and chairman of the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) to help him present his cause to Governor Blake. The Story Of Spanish Town
On the morning of May 10, 1655 two Spanish fishermen said to be out searching for turtles off Port Morant looked up and in shock saw a fleet of 38 ships with large cannons moving towards them. The British had arrived. Turtles forgotten, the fishermen spread the word and messengers set off for Villa de la Vega to warn the settlers. Close to 9000 men were said to have disembarked from those 38 ships † some 3000 more than the actual population of the island at the time. The capital city fell within days. Yet when the British realized that many Spaniards had fled to Cuba taking their valuables with them, they burned many buildings in anger. Much of Spanish Town was later rebuilt but during that time Port Royal acted as the unofficial capital, and the pirates based there protected the island from invasion until the devastating 1692 earthquake. When Queen Isabella of Spain asked Christopher Columbus to describe the island of Jamaica, the famed explorer is said to have struggled to find words to do its beauty justice. In attempting to describe Jamaica's terrain, Columbus is said to have resorted to fashioning hills and valleys out of table napkins as a way of explaining Jamaica's varied terrain that includes numerous sandy beaches, rivers and mountain peaks. To Columbus, the island, although lacking in gold, was "otherwise a paradise and worth more than gold." (Walker, 1992, p. 247). The island's ecosystem embraces tropical, sub-tropical and temperate plants. Indeed, a large proportion of Jamaica's flora and fauna can be found nowhere else in the world. Research has indicated that although the native vegetation of the island was almost all forest, with some marshland interspersed, today Jamaica has more than 3,000 different kinds of native flowering plants, of which 1,000 are endemic and over 200 of which are different species of orchids. Jamaican Healer And War Heroine Mary Seacole
Mary arrived home in time to encounter a full scale outbreak of yellow fever (a contagious disease that causes yellowing of the skin and a black vomit). She set to work immediately, trying to save and/or comfort as many as she could. Not long after, in 1854, England declared war on Russia, allying with France who was engaged in a territorial dispute with Russia over holy sites in Jerusalem and Nazareth. Mary learned that many of the officers she had treated over the years had been sent to the Crimean front to serve. The Crimea is a peninsula that includes the extreme Southeastern Ukraine and is bounded on the south and west by the Black Sea. Mary's greatest wish, she said, was to work where the sword of bullet had been busiest, and pestilence most strife. Claude McKay: Jamaica's Poet Laureate 1890 – 1948
Festus Claudius McKay was born in Clarendon in 1890 to Thomas and Hannah McKay, farmers. The youngest of eleven children he would go on to become one of the leading figures of the 1920s American cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance. From an early age he was an avid reader and he began writing poetry at the age of ten. As a teenager, McKay was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker after the trade school he was supposed to attend was destroyed by the 1907 earthquake. In that same year, something far more propitious occurred -- he acquired a mentor by the name of Walter Jekyll. Jekyll, an Englishman who became an avid collector of Jamaican folklore, encouraged McKay to write in Jamaican dialect. Full story…

Martin Luther King Jr. visits Jamaica (June 20, 1965)
Professor Patrick Bryan, then a graduating student in liberal arts and now a professor of history at the UWI, remembers that Dr. King may have spoken for close to 40 minutes but that it seemed like five. "It was an incredible experience to hear so strong and commanding a speaker ¬ it was as if you were entranced when listening to him," Prof. Bryan added. "He used no notes and talked without a hitch." The heat that rose from the tarmac of Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport was nothing compared to the level of expectation that was seeping through the thousands gathered on the tarmac that 21st day of April, 1966. The day was declared a public holiday in honour of the Emperor and people had started arriving from Wednesday night from places near and far, to form the largest crowd to have ever assembled at the Norman Manley International Airport. They came to the airport any way they could ¬ by car, by truck, by bus, by bicycle, by foot. Drum beats and chants were heard almost non-stop, providing an almost hypnotic rhythm. Simon Bolivar: El Liberatador
While in Jamaica, Simon Bolivar wrote the now famous "Letter from Jamaica" in which he expressed his ideas for republican government and Latin American unity. Widely recognized as an important political doctrine the letter was actually titled, "Reply of a South American to a Gentleman of this Island." It was Bolivar's lengthy response to a letter he had received from an unnamed Jamaican who empathized with Bolivar's struggle for South American liberation and indicated a desire to learn more about the politics and people of each South American province. Specifically, the Jamaican Gentleman asked Bolivar to explain such technicalities as whether each province desired a monarchy or a republic or to form one unified republic or one single monarchy. This sparked the Spanish American patriot and general to launch into his treatise an extensive description of the history of the different provinces (including the present-day countries of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru) and an exploration of his own ideas for their political futures. On Sunday November 1, 2009, TSO Productions and the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music held their 5th annual Reggae Culture Salute at Nazareth High School Performance Center, Brooklyn, New York. It was a very special event in celebration of the 79th Anniversary of the coronation of Haile Selassie the First and Empress Mennen of Ethiopia. The highlight of the evening was a tribute to Mighty Diamonds, who are celebrating 40 years as a group; the same three members standing strong after 40 years. They received three very prestigious accolades and awards, as follows:

1.They received a Citation from Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President.
2.They received the first ever Award for Excellence from TSO Productions and the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music.
3.They received a Congressional Proclamation from Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, of the 11th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York.

Congratulations to the Mighty Diamonds. Keep going strong.

Another legendary Jamaican has passed away. Trevor Rhone, actor, playwright, screenwriter, director and producer, died approximately 1:15 yesterday afternoon at the Medical Associates Hospital, from what family members said was a heart attack.

According to his niece, Jean Rhone, her uncle was in the best of health until yesterday morning when he started complaining of not feeling well.

Jamaican Canadian Association’s Late Night With Usain Bolt

On June 9, 2009, Usain Bolt, world’s fastest human being, passed through Toronto, Canada, to attend a reception in his honor, dubbed Late Night With Usain. This event was hosted by the Jamaican Canadian Association. Videos of Bolt’s world record races, from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, were played to an audience who watched in awe and behaved like they were seeing the races for the very first time. Bolt arrived to a heroes welcome. He later showed off his dancing skills, by demonstrating the ‘gully creeper’ (dance). Bolt was then asked to be one of the judges in a three-judge panel for a gully creeper dance contest, with contestants coming from the audience. It was an awesome event.

The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) has provided USD40,000 towards scholarships at the University of the West Indies (UWI), for the coming academic year. The money represents proceeds from the AFUWI Legacy Awards 2009 Gala, the organization’s premier fund-raising event which is hosted in New York each January.

AFUWI, a non profit Foundation, which over the past decade has provided scholarships and grants and funded special projects to foster the development of The UWI, has since 1998, recognized individuals and organizations “linked to the Caribbean who have made exceptional contributions to the world around them.”

Mr. Michael Flanigan, AFUWI Chairman, presented the scholarship cheque on behalf of AFUWI to UWI Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nigel Harris on May 01,2009

Noting that each year, hundreds of worthy applicants apply for scholarships at the UWI, Prof. Harris praised the AFUWI for “widening the window of opportunity for many deserving scholars.” Prof. Harris said that it was with the cooperation of organizations like AFUWI and generous corporate donors that the UWI can ensure those in challenging circumstances get a tertiary education.

Mr. Flanigan noted that the AFUWI has regularly facilitated donations and scholarships from individuals and corporations overseas for the UWI and its students, and last year presented 30 scholarships valued at over USD 130,000 to individual UWI students for tuition and books.

The AFUWI, he said, “is committed to the development of the Caribbean region and sees the University of the West Indies as central to achieving this.”

Jamaican Newton Marshall Finishes 13th in Dogsled Race

Congratulations to Newton Marshall and the entire Jamaica Dogsled Team. Keep up the great work.

In what is being described as a major coup in extreme sports, a former horseback-riding guide has become the first Jamaican and the first black man to take part in the gruelling Yukon Quest dog race in Alaska.

Just like the 1990s blockbuster bobsleigh film Cool Runnings, Newton Marshall has crossed all boundaries in the freezing Alaskan outback, finishing 13th in the toughest dogsled race in the world.

"It felt like climbing Mount Everest because the race spanned four different mountain ranges and along with that type of terrain, came the wind that cuts like a knife," said the 25-year-old St Ann-born man who first saw snow two years ago.

The conditions were so brutal, he felt like quitting several times but, like a rawboned, courageous Jamaican, kept on.

Negril, Westmoreland - Sandals Negril resort has become the first hotel in the world to receive Green Globe's inaugural Platinum Award for consistently meeting and exceeding the organisation's standards for environmental preservation and community involvement.

Adam Stewart, chief executive officer of Sandals Resorts International (SRI), the Caribbean's leading resort chain, after accepting the award last week, used the occasion to announce two groundbreaking environmental projects launched in St Lucia and The Bahamas which, if successful, will be replicated in Jamaica.

"We are changing the way we run our hotels, to serve Mother Nature," Stewart said. "If Sandals can do this in the other islands, then we can carry these programmes to Jamaica and other hotels will eventually catch on."

Urgent: Jamaica's Muder Rate and an Appeal to the United States Government

In 2008, Jamaica had another record year for murder, 1617. We are a responsible country and a responsible people so we take full responsibility for this crisis, as we continue to do what we can to arrest the problem. Most of these murders were committed with the use of guns. And almost none of our murders are against visitors to Jamaica.

There are no gun factories in Jamaica, and only very few of the guns used in murders in Jamaica are home-made. It is common knowledge that most of the guns that are used in murders in Jamaica come from the United States of America. While we love the United States of America, they do not do enough to help us with this problem. In fact, the entire Caribbean (Trinidad, Haiti, Guyana, etc) has become a dumping ground for guns that are manufactured n the United States of America.

Bonita Jamaica is appealing to the Government of the United States of America to implement measures that will see significant reductions in the export of guns and ammunition to Jamaica (and the rest of the Caribbean) as soon as possible. We know that with the right will this can be done. Everything we've tried from our end is not working. If we could cut off the guns and ammunition supply then in the medium to long-run things will get better. This is our humble and urgent appeal.

Of course, we understand that people turn to crime when they are destitute and hopeless. But a guns have a way of making people feel immortal and giving them unwise ideas. And yes, we are doing what we can with our scarce and limited resources to work on our social problems.

If you see this plea and knows someone in the incoming Obama administration, please pass it on to them. On behalf of the great people of Jamaica, we thank you.

What's the best memory that you will take with you from your tour of duty and any advice for your successor?

Answer
The great people I have met and great friends I have made. In spite of the fact that there is a wonderful diplomatic corps and an amazing staff to work with, you have to branch out and meet Jamaicans. They are what make this country great. I have found everyone from the lowliest worker to the prime minister to be hard-working, loves their family and is very patriotic. I admire so much the fact that almost everywhere I go, the national anthem is played, even at the movie theatre. We sing ours at the Super Bowl and big events but not as often as it is done here. Patriotism is very much a part of the Jamaican psyche.

Question
You honeymooned here and you have seen a lot of the country; do you have a favourite spot in Jamaica?

Answer
I am a diplomat so I can't pick one, but my children love Kool Runnings, Jakes in St Elizabeth, to jump off the cliff, the Black River Safari, Dunn's River Falls and all the other places that offer adventure. I like the resorts like the Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall, Jamaica Inn where Britain's John Major goes all the time; Round Hill with Josef Forstmayr (if I were going to be in the hotel business, it would only be if he could manage my property). We constantly go to Tryall because our family is huge and the villas are large and it offers everything. They have a fabulous tennis programme. Sandals
Montego Bay has made me a convert to all-inclusives too. I was there recently with a large group and I was stunned by the quality of everything and my friends were amazed. They know how to service the customer. Those are among the places I love.

Question
Do you have a love for any particular Jamaican food or dish?

Answer
I love chicken and I do think I have had more here than anywhere else. My children love Scotchies Restaurant in Montego Bay. It's their favourite place here. They feel they are 'Jamerican' and are often upset if when they leave they don't have a set return date. They have been here 16 times in three years. My other favourites are jerk chicken, callaloo and yams (though I'll never be Usain Bolt).
